The Beat: 4 Asian journalism students gather in Hawai'i for the Asian American Journalists Conference. Each is paired up with an NPR reporter/producer, and tasked with writing, reporting and producing a story in a week.
“I always knew I was a political animal, not a political junkie,” says Senator Mee Moua, Minnesota’s majority whip. She proved that claim when she became the first Hmong American legislator in U.S. history and the first Asian American woman elected to Minnesota state office in 2002.
Jin Au-Yeung is the only Asian American hip-hop artist to sign with a major record label. The 23-year-old recently gave a free concert for the Asian American Journalists Association at First Avenue Club. AAJALink caught up with the rapper.
The qeej (khaen), a traditional Hmong instrument, is commonly played at funeral wakes. Three times a week, a group of about 20 students gather at the Hmong Cultural Center to preserve their tradition. Here's Aranvihn Thor's story.
